Carl's Story

Sometime between 3:30-4:30 am on the morning of Oct 16, 2007, Carl Williams, an 8 year resident of Regency Cove, was cleaning up the front porch on Blvd 1. He finished his beer, crushed his cigarette into the ashtray, walked down the step to put a bag of trash out in front. A good friend had just left 15 minutes earlier, and Carl was smiling about some of the memories that conversation evoked.

Some movement down the street caught his attention. He noticed a younger, darker complected man walking north, and as he approached Carl, the man asked him for some money. Carl admits he may have been sharp with his response, maybe saying something like, "Go out and get a job." Carl turned his back on the guy. The first blow was to the back of his head, throwing Carl towards the wall of his porch. As he turned to face his attacker, a second punch caught him square in the face.

Carl tried to protect his face with both of his arms, attempting several times to kick his attacker. He worked his way off the porch, but the taller man had the better of him. Whether he slipped on the stones in front or was knocked down, Carl isn't sure, but he was kicked in the ribs while on the ground, and thinks he blacked out for maybe half an hour.

The first thing he remembers is his phone call to a friend, who showed up around 6am. He then dialed 911 and the paramedics, and later the police, arrived. Carl was taken to the VA hospital with head injuries, a missing tooth, and abrasions on his arms and legs. He remained for two and a half days. Carl is feeling better, sore in the ribs, but embarassed about being unable to better defend himself. He promises to be more vigilant in the future of strangers in the park .

Board Passes Marina Rules, Approves New Committee

At the Saturday meeting, the board unanimously approved a motion for new Marina rules. Also approved was an increase in the dock rental fee. The fee for renting an HORC dock will increase from $300 to $400 this coming year, and will increase an additional $100 next year (2009). A copy of the new Marina rules will soon be mailed to every dock owner in the park. The rules cover the use of private docks, as well as the $1,000 docks and the rentals. Also included are guidelines for the boat storage area, which now gives preference to shareholders over renters.

Also approved at the Saturday meeting was the formation of the new Appeals Committee. Although the names of the new committee members have not yet been released (why???), we look forward to an active and impartial committee to review upcoming disputes.

Board Orders Blog Altered

Several board members voiced their concerns about the contents of this wonderful vehicle of communication, and ordered drastic changes, or a disclaimer attached. I opted for the disclaimer, and you can see it on the right sidebar. There was discussion about the "anonymous" comments that have been contributed by the viewers. I personally welcome your comments, and frequently have suggested that your comments be brought up at our board meetings.

Most blogs on the web have comments added by persons with a distinct username, which of course is an anonymous identity. I am writing under my username "Living in Paradise", although my cover was blown recently when I left town.

Rather than agree to eliminate all of your wonderful comments, or to demand that you use your real identity in writing, I have decided to continue on with the blog, but change its name. I was asked to remove the photo, but, because it is not a registered trademark, there is no reason to do that.

I anticipate absolutely no change in the content of the postings. This blog is about things that happen in Regency Cove, and I believe that I have been fair and neutral in presenting any information.

As before, I will not accept and publish comments that are personal attacks on any resident of the park.

A new group has started, called The Losers, who meet every other week on Tuesdays at 1:00 at the clubhouse. Their goal is to share some good times while losing a little weight. Weigh-in is done privately, and everyone keeps track of their own progress. The members share stories and recipes, and congratulate eachothers' successes. Meeting fee is $2, which will provide incentive rewards.
If you need a little support to help you eat healthier, come join them on October 16 at 1:00. Call Marie Avant for more information. (Remember, DIET is a four letter word.)
