No News Is Good News

Community Association Institute

On Oct. 28, four board members attended a breakfast meeting of the "CAI". There were over 100 in attendance. Three attorneys were present who answered all questions from the audience, board members and managers from HOAs all over the county. The subjects were many, and the attorney advice well taken. Free advice from experts was appreciated.

New Directories

New directories will be released from the Office on Monday, November 3. Peggy and Mary have done an OUTSTANDING job on this issue!
These publications are historically outsourced to a local printing firm, after Peggy and Mary have done all the typing, ads, and layouts. This year, with the advantage of our new copy machine, the ladies also printed up each issue right in our office. We have saved well over $400 with this issue, thanks to their devoted efforts. Kudos to you both! We always like to save money!

A Call for Prayers for Larry

Earlier today, just after 11 am, Board member Larry Buttelwerth was with members of his Building Committee in a renovated home when he collapsed. Committee person Mary Lou Mittel was talking to him at that time. as was Chuck Davis, who made the 911 call.

Larry is currently in ICU at Tampa General. He suffered a blood clot to his brain. After an unbelievable brain surgery, he appears to be somewhat stable. His wife Nancy is asking for our prayers to get Larry through the next few days'

In the past few months, Larry has been a powerhouse committee chairperson for the Building Standards, and Marine Committee. He has been instrumental in establishing a written code for the Building Committee, which will be presented very soon to the shareholders.

Please pray for the speedy recovery of Larry Buttelwerth.

E-Waste Harmful Materials

Take advantage of the Department of Solid Waste's upcoming Household Chemical and Electronics Collection Day on October 25th from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. at 4010 W. Spruce Street, to safely dispose of your old televisions and computers (in addition to many other materials - visit www.tampagov.net/solidwaste for more information on materials accepted).

Electronic waste accounts for 70 percent of the overall toxic waste currently found in landfills. In addition to valuable metals like aluminum, electronics often contain hazardous materials like lead and mercury. In just 2005, almost two million tons of e-waste ended up in landfills.

While toxic materials comprise only a small amount of this volume, it doesn't take much lead or mercury to contaminate an area's soil or water supply. Before there were plasma screen and liquid crystal display (LCD) tubes, we were all watching our Super Bowls and sitcoms on cathode ray tubes (CRT). The CRT model provided room for all your switches and wires in a box behind the screen, but it also stored a lot of lead. Approximately 20 percent of CRTs are comprised of lead, equivalent to between four and eight pounds per unit.

Combine this with the fact that the FCC is going to require all televisions to run a digital signal by February 19, 2009, and we could be looking at a lot of lead headed for landfills. Even the smallest amounts of lead can be a serious issue, and we're talking about eight pounds per unit. ComputersMany laptops have a small fluorescent lamp in the screen that contains mercury, a toxic material when inhaled or digested.

Mercury is also contained in computer circuit boards, which also include lead and cadmium. Circuit boards can also feature batteries made of mercury, as well as mercury switches. So please consider this information and be sure to dispose of your e-waste at a local Household Chemical and Electronics site. Call the Department of Solid Waste & Environmental Program Management at (813) 348-1111 for more information.

Costumes Prizes Awarded

Linda and Rich Siddens took the 1st place award this evening for best costumes at the potluck supper. Doris Long won 2nd place. They each won Publix gift cards. Great party, loads of fun. We're still trying to determine if that Trailer Trash woman was for real, or if she wore a costume. She took 3rd place.

Beautification Committee Members Needed

The Beautification Committee was recently reinstated, and guess who they put in charge?

Residents of Regency Cove: I am imploring you to respond to my request for volunteers for this important committee. I have unfortunately been asked to fill the gigantic footsteps of Regency Cove legends such as Dick Warp, Don Stevens, and Wayne Lidstone. There may be a few more, and I will be happy to report them as they are told to me.

The Beautification Committee is that historically wonderful group of individuals who may take on some small painting tasks around the park. The Beautification Committee will be asked to contribute horticultural ideas for beautification of our common areas, at the Points, and at the memorial plantings along our West Shore boundary. We don't have to do the work, we can advise the maintenance crew. I am open to your suggestions for park beautificaton.

For all of you who read this blog every day, I am asking you to click on the "comment" button below, add your response, and for heaven's sake please help me out here!!! Call me, or leave a message in my mailbox. (15-28) I am asking for one hour per person. Period.

No one who contributes will go unnoticed or unappreciated.

Quote of the Week

"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."

Thomas Jefferson 1802

Amen to that, Brother.

Charter Fishing Group Scores

Despite 3 to 5 foot swells in the Gulf of Mexico, the Regency Cove group enjoyed their day on the Gulfstar, starting out of Tarpon Springs. Although no one landed any monsters, the fish came in steady. Ron Jeffries took the lottery for the largest fish.

Water Restrictions Continue

Summer Rains Not Enough for Water Resources to Fully Recover

October 1, 2008 - The Southwest Florida Water Management District’s Governing Board voted yesterday to extend the current Water Shortage Order, which restricts lawn watering throughout the District to one-day-per-week, through Feb. 27, 2009.The Governing Board chose to extend the term of the water shortage order because the region is still impacted by the two-year drought and portions of the District did not receive enough rain during the annual wet season.

Following two years of drought, the area was beginning to see normal rainfall patterns return, as well as the recovery of water resources. But while the rest of the state received significant rainfall from Tropical Storm Fay, the storm skirted our region and subsequent tropical systems brought drier air, rather than rainfall. As a result, the District is still experiencing a 24-month rainfall deficit.“Despite the better rainfall this past year, we have not seen recovery to pre-drought conditions,” said Granville Kinsman, hydrologic data manager.

For more information about water restrictions, the drought and how you can conserve water, visit the District’s web site at www.WaterMatters.org/drought.Questions concerning water restrictions can be answered during normal business hours by calling 1-800-848-0499 or 1-800-423-1476, extension 4498.Tampa's Emergency Water Use Ordinance 2006-104 applies to more than just lawn watering.

Visit www.tampagov.net/dept_Water/information_resources/restrictions/Emergency_Ordinance_2006-104.asp to view all the restrictions that apply to outdoor water use inside Tampa's City limits or call (813) 274-8121 for more information.

Obituary

We are saddened to hear of the peaceful passing of Betty Barker on September 26, 2008. Her daughters, June Routledge and Betty Ann Van Erp, remarked that their Mother had a wonderful life and that she truely enjoyed her friends at Regency Cove. They requested that no cards be sent.
Our condolences go out to you both.

Sunset Point Preview

Just recently, the construction equiptment was pulled off Sunset Point (and moved to Pelican Point), and the yellow barrier tapes were taken down. What a surprise!

No, this isn't downtown, it isn't Tampa General Hospital. This is Sunset Point.

Boat Storage Yard Improvements Continue

Left: Mike and Richard pack the subsurface in preparation for the crushed stone.

Throughout the day, various members of the maintenance crew have been involved in completing the improvements to the boat storage yard. The old weedy layer had been stripped, and today 18 yards of packing soil were spread and leveled with hand tools while Ed uses the bobcat.

Once the surface is adequately leveled and packed, crushed shell is loaded onto the bobcat and dumped ... 8 yards of it. Once again it is leveled with hand tools. Nice job guys!

Who's number 1? They are!

October Activities

Its time to turn the page of the calendar, and once again bemoan how quickly each month seems to pass.

Everyone is very pleased with the new editor and layout of the Outlook. Our congratulations and thanks go out to Judy Webb, for her professionalism. If you haven't seen it, rush to the Information Room and pick up a copy before they disappear. We will soon provide electronic copies free of charge to those who request this service. Check with the Office, and leave your email address with Peggy.

Club Regency will have a true pot luck (no meat provided) on October 20. Costume judging will occur between 5:00 and 5:30. The meal will begin promptly after grace is said at 5:30 pm. A Spook-Tacular Magic Act will follow the meal. Everyone in the park is invited, but please sign-up in the Information Room and don't forget to bring a covered dish which will feed at least 8 people, your beverage, and your utensils and plate. Very nice prizes will be awarded for best costumes.
