New Surface for Common Areas

Ed Scobee and his maintenance crew have been sealing Sunset Point, the parking lot, and Pelican Point. Last night Ed was out there til dinnertime sealing the parking lot and Pelican.
Today Ed and Richard are finishing up with the parking lines. They have used 1100 gallons of seal coat for the project in these two areas alone.
Many other areas of the park have had repairs made, in anticipation of this coating. Ed estimates that they are saving the park around $30,000 by doing the work themselves. By tomorrow the parking lots will be open for use. Sometime after the holiday weekend the crew will begin sealing
the streets. Residents will be notified in advance when their block is being done. Do not park if barricades are set up. Every other block will be scheduled, so parking will be accessible.
Beautiful job, guys!

2010 Disaster Packets Distributed

Block captains and summer alternates are in the process of distributing Disaster Preparedness Packets to all residents currently in the park.
PLEASE fill out the response form and turn it into the Office ASAP.

One form is for signing up with the Comfort Inn on Busch Blvd, to evacuate with the park. Read page 3 of your packet for information and prices.

The other form is to be used if you plan to evacuate on your own. (I noticed that this form never asks for your name... maybe it is being filed by address only).
In the event of a catastrophe and we are unable to return to the park, the Office must know how to contact you. In 2004 when Hurricane Charlie hit parks in Punta Gorda, it was over a month before electricity and telephone service was restored to the area.

Anyone wishing to help out as a temporary block captain during the summer should give Ruth Paruszkiewicz a call. Many volunteers did multiple streets for this distribution. We always need alternates during the summertime.
A reminder from Ruth Paruszkiewicz: Please be aware of frequent power failures that occur in the summertime. Please empty your freezers if you are going to be gone for longer than a few days. In 2004, she and a few other had to literally scrape clean the freezers of friends who were gone while the power was out for several days. No one wants to return home to a science project growing in their Frigidaire. Take a few minutes and give your food away or discard it.

OMG ...The Love Bugs Are Back

Love Bugs are really not a "bug" at all – it is a fly (Diptera). But, whatever it is, it is known to bug drivers on Florida's highways as they emerge in April and May and again in September and October.
The "love bug" nickname seems to have evolved by the visible in-flight mating of the species. Females emerge from their larvae into a swarm of males and are grasped by a darting male. The pair falls to the ground where they couple and eventually take flight – often into the path of your speeding vehicle, your boat, or body, if you happen to be out for a walk.
"Love bugs" are drawn to the highways by light and automobile exhaust fumes. If you are traveling mid-morning or mid-to-late-afternoon, you are more likely to have the hood and windshield of your automobile pelted with the winged black "bugs" which leave behind hard-to-remove carcasses.
Other than avoiding the peak hours for the "bugs" flight, not much can be done to spare your automobile. Regular windshield wiper fluid often does not easily remove the bugs and the result of running your wipers is a streaked gooey mess that cuts visibility. Keeping a bucket in your car stocked with a bottle of water, a non-scratch pad, and baking soda is your best defense. The baking soda is known to make removal of the little critters easier.
A reader wrote me an email last summer, "I live in Louisiana the easiest fastest way to remove the love bugs you speak of on your website that plague Florida, Texas and Louisiana — use water and a Bounce® fabric [softner] sheet, will remove the bugs instantly and not scratch the paint. Very best method there is.” I tried this and it works great! I even tried it with another fabric sheet — Snuggle® — and it works just as well. Everyone should be able to keep a small supply of fabric softner sheets in their car along with a bottle of water. Great tip!

May 4 Board Meeting

All board members were present and accounted for at yesterday's board meeting. Our president, of course, was present via conference telephone, a perfectly acceptable and legal method of attending a board meeting.
It was noted at the opening of the meeting, that Ed Scobee has fallen ill, and was, at last notice, in the Emergency Room awaiting a bed, and it was thought that he may have suffered a TIA, a stroke-like episode. Cheri was not present at this meeting. {Our thoughts and prayers are with the Scobee family right now}

Minutes were accepted, but not read. (Why? This was a short meeting!)

A brief Treasurer's report was given by Susan, and then she gave an additional financial report which prompted a motion to fund several reserves ... from my memory, more towards the "new gate", and an additional $20k towards coating streets, and also actually repairing sections of Boulevards 3 and 5 to alleviate the flooding at the Sunset Blvd end of those streets. Questions from the membership regarding the large cracks in the asphalt in all the other areas of the park were answered by the committeeman Tim Reynolds, that, as per company reps who came out to estimate... there are no other problem areas in the asphalt of our park.

Our maintenance mens' uniforms were the next agenda item. Cintas currently provides, replaces, and launders the uniforms of our four maintenance personnell. The old 4 year contract with Cintas is coming to an end this July, and they require a 60 day notice to cancel the contract. One board member called around for additional prices and got a $2k reduction, for a 5 year contract, from guess who? ...CINTAS!! Isn't that unbelievable? The closest competitor is the same company!! A little more homework needs to be done by our BOD. The residents who voiced an opinion wanted to avoid a 5 year contract (if possible) or to continue providing and laundering the uniforms for our maintenance guys. They always look so clean, and responsible.

The final agenda item was, for all practical purposes... dismissed. Another topic became the priority. While discussing a computer software program that the board wants to buy, we learned that TriNet, the company who leases our employees, is dropping us in July. It has been taken over by a larger company who has opted to eliminate all the smaller resident owned communities, namely us. These companies not only provide payroll, but also 401k and medical insurance for our employees.

Our management and directors just learned this last Friday. There was little time for them to prepare any alternate facts or figures for this meeting. The one thing that we learned is that some members of our board are actively pursuing a new course of action, a management company. The shareholder membership in attendance had many questions about that... How much more will this cost, and How do we get get rid of them if they get too aggressive?

Our president Paul assigned a committee on the spot, to study this dilemma. (One board member he assigned was leaving the park, right after this meeting.) No one from the board OR
the membership volunteered for that position. Good ole Chet offered to sit in for awhile. We'll see what happens.....
