Boat Storage Yard Improvements

Today our maintenance crew spent the day preparing the grassy section of the storage lot for the new surfacing which will be installed tomorrow. The weedy grass was removed and a layer of soil stripped, for the placement of crushed shell. This area has been unsightly in the past, occasionally neglected by the lawn crews.

Boats parked here are splashed with mud in rainstorms. The neat clean shell surface will definately be an improvement. The majority of boat owners currently using this lot are paying $400 annually to the park for their docks, and this will soon be raised to $500 annually. The cost of this repair is easily covered by their dock fees.

Free Lunches?

Chances are that you've been invited to one of those "free lunch" seminars that push insurance or financial products. And if you've attended any, you know there's usually nothing free about them. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission says these events often feature misleading claims and promote risky investments.

If you've already decided to attend a seminar, consider volunteering as a "free lunch" monitor for AARP. They would like to see the seminar invitations that you received.

To volunteer as a seminar monitor, go to www.aarp.org/nofreelunch. Send your invitations to AARP, Financial Security Free Lunch Mailbag, 601 E Street NW, S11-176, Washington DC 20049

Most Dangerous Chocolate Cake

I just got this in an email and tried it out. A little doughy but...

Most Dangerous Chocolate Cake Recipe in the World

MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

1 Coffee Mug
4 tablespoons flour(that's plain flour, not self-rising)
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons baking cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
Small splash of vanilla
Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well . Add the egg and mix thoroughly.Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla, and mix again.Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts. The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to share!)

And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world? Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!

A brand new home was wheeled into the park this morning. It is being placed on Blvd 3 Lots 3 and 5. Bill Paz, the owner, has been working closely with the Building Standards Committee the past several months, to determine the best home for the allowed space.
Bill and Stella Paz will be a great addition to Regency Cove. We hope your installation is flawless and your move into the park is smooth and swift. The neighbors always love to watch the action.

Lt. Johnson at Neighborhood Watch

We always enjoy when Lt. Duane Johnson, night shift commander at District 1, visits Regency Cove to speak at our Neighborhood Watch and Safety Meeting, which occurred tonight at 7 pm.

He spoke briefly about the incident that occurred about a month ago when several trespassers were arrested in the park. Trespass Affadavits have been issued, so if these violators ever show up again, the police can haul them away.

Lt. Johnson reminded everyone to lock up their bikes every night. Chet Hindman reported earlier that since the north boundary fence has been installed, no bike thefts have occurred. Apparently the high solid fence has foiled the thieves, for the moment. Chet has been issuing cable locks to those who register their bikes.

Lt. Johnson warned everyone to lock up the frame, not just the tire, because people have found their bikes stolen and all that is left is the tire and the lock. These kids, he reported, will trade off the tires, frames, and other parts of our bikes the minute they make it into their neighborhoods, making our bikes indistinguishable.

When asked, Lt. Johnson said that his officers do enter the park periodically for patrols, and he has done it himself.

The official police recommendations are:

  • Do not confront anyone. Call the police to report a suspicious person.

  • If you see someone suspicious in the park, call the non-emergency police number 231-6130. Describe as much as possible what you saw regarding clothing, size, hair. Very often the police will pick up the offenders outside of the park, walking down the neighborhood streets.

  • In an emergency, call 9-1-1. If you don't know if its an emergency, call 9-1-1 and let the operator decide.

  • If you hear a helicopter circling overhead: First: Lock all doors. Lock your car, if you can, from inside your home. Next: turn on all outside lights. If you hear any unusual noises on your property, call the police. Many times, offenders are caught when citizens report that they have heard noises coming from their sheds. Lt. Johnson said that many bad guys will hide in spaces about the size of large cat, for up to 6 hours, to avoid capture.

The final topic of the evening was "mandatory hurricane evacuation". In the event of a Governor issued mandatory evacuation, everyone must go. The local police will come into the park, and literally carry people away. They are ordered to knock on every door and remove every citizen to safety. We can only hope that the residents of Regency Cove will comply, and maybe leave a sign in the front door that says "Evacuated to family in ...." or "Evacuated to ...... Hotel".

It was a great meeting. Too bad more people weren't present.

Boat yard fence

Eight foot wooden fence is up and looks great! Because of winding condition it has not been sprayed yet, with Ike around that won't happen for awhile. When your out and about check it out. Thank you, Ed, Mike, Richard, and Robert, great job.

What a geat time we had eating Edy's ice cream and homemade cookies! Edy's provided 12 different kinds of ice cream, plus scoops, bowls, and even the spoons and napkins. What a treat for a hot afternoon. Seventy-two people came out to enjoy the party.

Chet Hindman was registering bikes while the party was going on. Another dozen or so bikes will be added to our database. Registrants were given a nice bike lock and steel cable to use.
We all sang Happy Birthday to park president Ron Herb.

Hurricane Ike Alert

After an Emergency Meeting of the Board early this afternoon, a two page Hurricane Information Alert handout was distributed to all summer residents of the Park this afternoon. ( Please call a Board member if you did not receive one.)

Our manager Cheri Scobee prepared the information and called all the available Board members for this meeting. HORC will do everything possible to support the mandatory evacuation. Goodwin Hall will be locked and not accessible to residents after a mandatory evacuation has been called. Police will be notified of any residents who refuse to evacuate.

Food and Water are the responsibility of every resident who evacuates to the hotel on Busch Blvd with us, in the event of power failures and flooding. Do not anticipate that people will be running out for food during this event. This is not a picnic, nor a party.

So few people requested bus transportation, this year that the Board arranged personal accommodations for those few. As a storm approaches, do not expect the Office to arrange any transportation services for you at the last minute. Rely instead on your neighbors and friends. Our services have been arranged for weeks now.

We cannot stress this enough.....

Clean up your home and lot site! All statues, potted plants, wind chimes, lawn chairs, and decorative items will become missiles, and will damage homes. (We may have to remove some.)

Please follow the directions on the Mandatory Evacuation (page 2). If you have questions, please contact Disaster Coordinator Susan Dunphy (813-839-4992) or (813-917-8796). You can also call President Ron Herb at (813-839-8397) OR (813-416-9115). There is a form for you to fill out to let us know about your evacuation plans. Please fill out this form and return it to any Board member, or to the Office in the mail slot. We want to be able to account for every resident!

Stay alert! Follow the News Bulletins! Be ready to evacuate! Bring water and food.
At 5 pm today, Hurricane Ike appears to be heading south and slightly west of Tampa, hitting midweek. We have no crystal ball, and no one can predict the storm surges. Be prepared with an evacuation site, and food and water.

With all due respect to our Snowbirds: We love you and miss you, but this is not the time we need to hear from you. Please do not clog our phone lines with calls for weather information. Please follow this Blog or our local Tampa weather forecasts on http://www.channel10.com/ or http://www.wunderground.com/. We promise to keep you informed as soon as we can.

Caution Advised at Sunset Point

Due to the removal of sections of the seawall cap at Sunset Point, caution is advised to all residents who frequent Sunset Point. Please do not go beyond the barricades.
