The Friendship Trail Bridge has been permanently closed since Dec 22, 2008, due to deterioration. Chain link fences now block access to the exercising, recreational, and fishing sites once so famous for this bridge.
The call to close the 2.6-mile span and its fishing catwalks was based on a final engineering report from an independent company that warned of a potential collapse of any portion of the bridge, as announced by both Pinellas County and Hillsborough County public works directors.
According to the engineering report, widespread corrosion, loss of concrete sections and broken steel reinforcement bars would be too expensive to repair.

There will be a meeting at the Jan Platt Library, 7:00 Wednesday July 15th, for people who are interested in keeping the Friendship Trail viable. We are hoping for a great turn-out at this meeting to demonstrate our local support to keep the bridge.
Please come out to sign-in and fill out the comment sheet to "FIX" the bridge. We need lots of people to turn out. Since the bridge is in our neighborhood area, we are asking for your help.
If you are a snowbird, please email JerryFrankhouser at www.baysidewest.50megs.com and tell him your feelings about keeping the bridge open. We will share your ideas with the state officials.
