Gandy Overpass Meeting

There is Still Hope

There was an interesting meeting tonight at the Scan Design store next to SweetBay. Representatives from our own Bayside West Neighborhood Association, our neighboring friends south of Gandy Blvd at the Gandy/Sun Bay South Civic Association, and multiple store owners and residents all along Gandy were present.
The message presented was made very clear: THEA (Tampa/Hillsborough County Expressway Authority) continues to publish that there is no community opposition to the proposed Gandy Overpass Project. At an earlier community meeting, THEA declared that they will not build if the surrounding communities oppose the project.

Our two local neighborhood associations were extremely pleased that Regency Cove finally published a statement that by a 3 to 1 vote, our residents are against the project. Local petitions outside our park have gathered 1500 signatures against this project.
Tampa City Council has no authority over this project, however this issue is foremost in the minds of those people we are paying to represent us. They should be representing us to the THEA board.
We will appear this Thursday morning at the meeting of city council to let John Dingfelder, our representative, and the rest of city council know that Regency Cove, and 1500 other locals have voted against this project.
If you would like to come along for a hands-on Civics lesson, speak to our city council or just observe, and let them know that a two to three-story concrete bridge outside our front door is not our idea of community improvement, give me a call. I'll drive. I am leaving the park at 8am. Sandy Ross 835-9098

YOUR STATEMENT ABOUT THE EXPRESSWAY AUTHORITY IS COMPLETELY FALSE -- I WAS AT THE MPO MEETING WHEN THEY WERE ASKED ABOUT THE COMMUNITY SUPPORT AND THEY DID NOT SAY THERE WAS NO OPPOSITION TO THEIR IDEA -- THEY SAID THERE WAS MUCH LESS OPPOSITION THAN FOR OTHER PAST SOLUTIONS -- NO EXCUSE FOR YOU TO POST FALSE INFORMATION

I stand by my post. Once again, a little slower this time, THEA has made statements about community opposition. The Metropolitan Planning Organization is not in charge of this project, and is not providing funds for it.In fact, they only allow one representative of THEA to serve on the MPO board. Although this project is mentioned in their long range plan, they are not implementating at all.

Obviously "Anonymous" is the one thats completely false. The party is speaking "with forked tongue"

I really don't think there are "forked tongues" in the park. That term dredges up memories of "Devils" from the past.
I think that writer simply made a mistake. There are plenty of articles in today's St Pete Times and TBT verifying my post about all the neighborhood associations' positions (opposition) to this before city council on Thursday. I was there. I heard them speak to the council, I was one of them, I spoke to the council too. The position of all of us was that the neighborhood was improperly represented by THEA in terms of its acceptance of the Gandy Overpass. We are opposed to the planned three-story concrete structure planned for the Gandy median.
If you think this is a good idea for the neighborhood, that's your opinion. I'm sorry, but you are in the minority. That's just the way it is.
