Sign Petition to Stop Gandy Overpass

As most of you know there is another attempt to get the neighborhood's approval for a bridge extension of the Selmon Crosstown Expressway from the exit on Gandy Blvd to the Gandy Bridge.

Two businesses on Gandy have a petition drive under way in opposition to the bridge concept. Should you like to sign the petition it is available at Scan Design on W. Gandy Blvd and Triage Consignments across the street on S. Lois.

Thank you for taking the time to participate.

Bad Behavior on Earth

One day God was looking down at Earth and saw all of the rascally behavior that was going on. So he called one of His angels and sent the angel to Earth for a time.

When he returned, he told God, 'Yes, it is bad on Earth; 95% are misbehaving and only 5% are not. God thought for a moment and said, 'Maybe I had better send down a second angel to get another opinion.'
So God called another angel and sent him to Earth for a time.

When the angel returned he went to God and said, 'Yes, it's true. The Earth is in decline; 95% are misbehaving, but 5% are being good.'
God was not pleased. So He decided to e-mail the 5% that were good, because he wanted to encourage them, and give them a little something to help them keep going.

Do you know what the e-mail said?

Okay, I was just wondering, because I didn't get one either.

Emergency Watering Restrictions

City Council Approves Tougher Water Restrictions Residents limited to hand watering and micro irrigation only Tampa, Fla. (March 19, 2009)

Tampa City Council approved a revised emergency ordinance today for water customers in the city’s water service area that further tightens watering restrictions. Turf irrigation is restricted to hand watering. Irrigation of non-turf landscaping may be done by hand watering or micro irrigation. The restrictions apply to all uses including parks and athletic play areas, such as ball fields, within the city limits. The current watering days and hours, which are determined based on address, remain the same. The revised restrictions will take effect on April 3, 2009. The new emergency water restriction ordinance will be available at www.tampagov.net/WaterRestrictions. (The list summarizes the changes and can be also found on www.baysidewest.50megs.com. On the front page there is a link).

The Council’s vote was more restrictive than the Mayor’s recommendation to reduce irrigation to twice per month. Tampa’s dry season is typically March 1 through June 15 and demands typically exceed 100 million gallons a day (mgd), with 15 mgd attributable to irrigation alone. Tampa Water Department customers that are located outside of the city limits are being asked to comply on a voluntary basis. For questions regarding the new restrictions or additional information, residents should contact the Water Department’s Conservation Section at (813) 274-8121. MAJOR CHANGE NO SPRINKLER SYSTEMS!!! HAND WATERING ONLY.

Growing Trash Can Potatoes

From the Old Farmers' Almanac

SOME GARDENERS SWEAR that they grow great potatoes in old trash cans-either plastic or galvanized metal. Be sure to punch some drainage holes in the bottom. (A barrel, a wooden box, or any large container at least 18 inches deep with good drainage will work.) Put a layer of soil about six inches deep into the bottom. Place the seed potatoes inside, then cover with three inches of mulch or soil. When leaves appear and plants are six to eight inches high, add another layer of soil and continue hilling them up until they reach the top. To harvest, simply turn the can onto its side and shake out the crop!

Food Recalls Hit Home

From: FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency)

Subject: Citizen Corps News: Does your Emergency Preparedness Kit contain recalled or expired items?

Currently the United States is in the midst of one of the largest food recalls in American history. As Americans dig through their cabinets and refrigerators to remove potentially contaminated food associated with the recent peanut recall, we would like to also remind citizens to open and check their Emergency Preparedness Kits to remove any potentially harmful items from these also.
Because peanut products are often recommended as staples in Emergency Preparedness Kits due to their long shell life and because they are a good source of protein, we encourage all kit owners to look at their kits to ensure food products are not on the peanut recall list. Please keep in mind that the peanut product recall extends beyond peanut-flavored products. The following are some examples of foods also included in the recall that may contain peanuts:
Granola
Snack bars
Crackers
Cereal
Trail Mix
Cookies
Noodles
Dog treats

A full list of recalled peanut products and what individuals should do with recalled items can be found on the Food and Drug Administration’s Web site, http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/peanutbutterrecall/index.cfm.

In addition to checking for peanut-related items, please be sure to check for other items in your kit that may have expired, including medications, food and pet food, water, and other recalled items. The U.S. government provides information on unsafe, hazardous, or defective products ranging from consumer products, food, medicine, and cosmetics at www.recalls.gov.

Ensuring family and neighbors are prepared is an essential step in helping communities during and after an emergency. Families should have an Emergency Preparedness Kit in all locations that are frequented often, including homes, offices, schools, cars and day care facilities. These kits should hold a variety of essential items that are needed during a disaster, such as a flashlight, radio, cash, clothing, protective equipment, medicines, and of course food and water. For a complete list of Emergency Preparedness Kit recommended items, please visit http://www.fema.gov/plan/prepare/supplykit.shtm.

Pool Volunteers to Meet

All the residents who have assisted in the management of the pool this season are requested to gather at 2:00 on Sunday March 8, 2009, at the clubhouse. Susan Dunphy will conduct a short meeting.

Blvd 7 Grant

In case you've been wondering why these postings have been so few and far between lately, its because I have been totally preoccupied with the Blvd 7 landscaping project. Since our planting meeting in February, I've done a drawing and submitted estimates to 5 nursery garden centers. The estimates are coming in.
Our ground cover will consist of Asiatic jasmine and evergreen giant liriope. A nice variety of small trees will be staggered throughout the median: pink crape myrtle, several dwarf little gem magniolias and a yellow spring-blooming delight called Jerusalem thorn. A few new ornamental palms will also be included: a Chinese fan palm, a bottle palm, and a triple clump of Christmas palm.

The major plants will include red to pink ixora in the crape myrtle section, and yellow to orange ixora in the Jerusalem thorn areas. Purple love grass, mona lavender shrubs, and cardboard palm will fill out the first planting.

All of these plants, once established, require very little water, and should serve as a model to the community for your home landscaping projects.
Contact Sandy Ross or the Office if you're interested in assisting in the planting stage or the watering stage, which will be coming up later this month.

Power Outage

The power outage tonight apparently was the result of a violent car accident just outside our Sunset Blvd gate. There appears to be some damage to our gate and/or fence, and also a power pole in that area. The word on the street, not verified, is that the pick-up truck had boxes of roofing nails that are currently covering West Shore Blvd.
TECO was on the scene in a flash (groan!), and power was quickly restored.
