Horticulture Tips
Lisa Strange, our Master Gardener from Florida Yards and Neighborhoods has advised us to temporarily ignore the dead landscaping and foliage around your house. Don't rush into cutting off the dead leaves and branches. Many hybiscus, rubber trees, and ornamental palms may be all brown right now, but many of them will bounce right back in the springtime. Pruning them right now may cause further damage in the event of another cold snap.
Be patient, spring is just around the corner.

Lanterns Missing
Earlier this month, our office assistant was married on Sunset Point. After the wedding, a party followed in the hall. During that time, someone decided to steal the lanterns she had brought over to decorate the waterfront for her ceremony. See the lantern in the picture?
Michelle received the lanterns as a gift from her sister who passed away shortly after. Michelle is desperate to get her treasures back. If they are returned to the office, no questions will be asked. Please, show some kindness, and return her belongings.

Florida Legislature in Session
A new general bill has been introduced by Senator Robaina that directly impacts Chapter 719 F.S. community associations. The bill provides various provisions relating to specified community associations, including disputes, powers, duties, insurance, officers, meetings, notices, governance, foreclosure, liens, contracts, borrowing, transfer fees, maintenance, termination, etc.
It includes two year limitations on terms for board of directors, requirement for 24 hr. notice to enter a unit (unless in an emergency) and 2 persons are necessary to enter the unit. Newly elected directors will certify that they have read the statutes and the community documents, or they will be removed from office. There are guidelines for placing things on a meeting agenda, and new stipulations for records that are open to the shareholders.
As yet, we have been advised to watch and wait.

Congratulations Block Captains
The first notice of our annual meeting in March, and a call for candidates went out yesterday and today with our block captains. You also received a copy of the new Rules and Regulations, and Building Standards, putting them into effect. Please get any remaining packets back to the office by noon.
Ruth Paruszkiewicz is a prominent member of the Communication Committee and the Captain of the block captains. Ruth and her block captains did a magnificent job of distributing the first notice packets to our shareholders. Despite a cruise this week that took many residents (and block captains) down to the Carribbean sunshine, Ruth was able to distribute a huge portion of the packets to shareholders, thus saving considerable postage fees for the association. Residents who were not home are encouraged to pick up their packet at the Office, before they get mailed. This mailing is a legal responsibility of the Board of Directors.
Nicely done, Block Captains!
Every little bit helps!

Helicopter Hovering
A suspicious vehicle parked at West Shore and Price has prompted evacuations in the area, Bay News 9 is reporting. A helicopter has been hovering north of the area, and north of our park, as close as officials will allow. A bomb squad and the FBI have been called in to investigate.Apparently in the area is a business DSE Inc. that makes ammunition for the military. Watch the news to see how this turns out.
Update: Police searched the van and found nothing suspicious, and then towed it.

Agenda Meeting
The Board of Directors will meet at 2:00 on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, to set the agenda for the January 20th meeting.
Cold Snap Victims
Anyone who wandered the seawall today witnessed a very sad result of the recent unprecedented cold snap. As the afternoon tide returned, it brought scores of fish which littered our beach in varying degrees of dying and dead. One plucky resident literally filled a bucket with comatose red snapper, that was still moving a little. Other residents in a rowboat, or hip boots, scooped up the best catch in recent times.
We've all mourned as we watched the manatees huddling together for survival in our rivers and at the power station. We've learned that extended periods of 68 degree water temperature or lower might kill them. The boaters seem to be killing them at a rate faster than normal, and now this cold snap occurred. We'll soon be hearing how this all plays out for our manatees.
There's nothing we can do to stop this process of natural selection. You just might want to come down, at low tide, to the water's edge and witness this phenomenon... the birds have been spectacular! The people-show isn't bad either.

Highlights of 2009
The following is a recap of the highlights of the year 2009. You can find most of these articles in the blog archives.
January
An afternoon tornado whizzes down Gandy Blvd. taking with it our front sign and causing damage to the bait shops.
Gasparilla Jan 31
The flagons await the pirate invasion 0f 2009. Ron Jeffries served as Chairman pirate of the Gasparilla celebration again this year. For the first time, the Regency Cove Ramblers were scheduled to entertain on the Point. They were a big hit. It sure was a cold day.
February
The project plods along.
The new sign installed looks very much like the old one. The supports are much stronger, and it is better illuminated.
March -April
Board elections were held. Patti Fennessey was originally placed on the board in Dec 2008 to fill a vacancy but was re-elected in March, with new board member Paul McCumber, and incumbent Chet Hindman.Officers were sworn in shortly after the elections.
Golf Picnic was held in Junglelandia. What a fabulous photo!
The March Volunteer Picnic for all the wonderful people who give of their time and talents to Regency Cove. Ed and Cheri Scobee ran the grills and fed well over 130 people in a very short time. The Hillsborough County Office of Neighborhood Relations (ONR), the folks who awarded the grant, were our guests for the day. The weather was beautiful, and the food wasn't bad either.
In April, our new secure web page was unwrapped. Residents and renters will be granted access to the secure section of the website. You can view it at http://www.regencycove.com/.
May
Mary Rambler retires and Michelle Duran fills her part-time office position.
Elsa Gorr fills Larry Buttlewerth's vacancy on the Board of Directors.
Manatee photo taken in Pirates' Cove by Ron Jeffries.
The first time ever Kentucky Derby party, organized by Betty Ridge and many volunteers, was a smash!
Pool lights completed. Our pool is now legal for after sunset swimming.
Swine Flu warnings circulate the park.
June
Pool repairs completed. Pool was drained and stairway repaired. Ed Scobee spent most of the evening on guard here, watching over the hoses. Residents were (mostly)very patient throughout the repairs, and very happy when the job was completed.
Fire extinguishers are mandated for all units. Call the Office if you have any questions.
Garparilla statue makeover.
July
Disaster meetings take place in Regency Cove. A speaker from the United Way taught residents how to prepare for a disaster. Videos were shown on a later Sunday afternoon to drive home the point. These videos are available for your viewing. Contact S.Ross.
AED class - After the installation of the AED (defribulator) in the clubhouse, ten residents took part in a half day training session to actually learn how to use the thing.
FriendshipTrail Bridge was closed to pedestrian traffic months earlier. but was reported on the blog in July.
August
Ron Herb takes a leave of absence from the board for health reasons.
A freak storm leaves power lines down in the western end of the park for more than half a day.
September
9-11 ceremony
The Davis Family party in hall on September 12 drew a large crowd. The food was FABULOUS. Chuck and Virginis sure know how to throw a party.
October
The tool shed for seawall engineering company is finally removed from Sunset Point. It looks like this seawall project is just about done.
November
Thanks to Mary Lou Mittel for organizing a delightful ceremony honoring the veterans in the park. The Veterans Day ceremony was held in the hall near the 11th hour on 11/11.
After acquiring some palms at discount prices, volunteers planted several at the pool and out on Pelican Point.
On the last day of November, residents gathered to decorate the hall for Christmas, and to share in some good spirits.
December
President Ron Herb, facing an upcoming surgery, decided to resign from the Board of Directors. Resident Betty Ridge was appointed by the board of directors to temporarily fill that position. Paul McCumber was chosen by a majority of the board to take the position of president.
These are just a few of the 180 posts that were written during the year 2009. Thank you for your readership. We now advance into a new year and a new decade. We look forward to your participation in the park events and the meetings of the board of directors. And as always, please volunteer.
Have a wonderful new year. Your comments are always welcome.
